Our Battle Field

O Socii, tomorrow is a great and honourable day. It is a day in which we can put to use our right as citizens of the Unitest States of America to elect our leaders. In days past leaders were often chosen through strength of arms. Men proved their courage on the battle field, fighting for their king, that they might live peaceful lives under their king. We have no bloody battle field on which to pour our blood and prove our valor, but we do have the Moscow Skating Rink, and tomorrow from 8 to 8. May it not be said of the students of New Saint Andrews college that they did not bother to go out and vote.

If you are unsure of who to vote for, here is a good guide:
Right-Mind (Dale Courtney)
Doug Wilson

See you at the Polls!

Homo proponit, sed Deus disponit. O Socii, Proponite!

Picture Day 2006

Yes, they are finally here. This is what happens when you get a whole school of classically educated people (well, under construction that is) together and try to take a picture of them:

Herodotus - Ancient Greece Maps

Evening fellow speed-readers,

Click on the title for a link to a cool map I found. It is centered on Greece, and you can see up to Thrace and down as far as Rhodes. It is especially nice because of all the small cities (which really are important, as Mr. Schlect as made us aware) are written, such as Miletus, Halicarnassus, Naxos on the isle of Naxos, and some of my personal favorites such as Magnesia, Sigeum, Megara.

(Note: There are several maps to click on once you've reached the actually site, but the one I printed off was Ancient Greece 2)

After recitation this afternoon, our group had a huddle in the hall and made it a priority to pull out all the stops when we study, i.e., maps, outlines, memorizing names and details and geography.

Hope this helps the rest of y'all! Enjoy, and God bless your wearied eyes!

Welcome Back!

The new school year is about to start. It has been wonderful to see the faces of those friends who left us Idahoians here for three months!

We all know how terrifying everyone likes to make the second year of New St. Andrews sound. Maybe it is. But by God's grace we survived the first year, and with His grace we will do the second!

Psalm 127

Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are the children of the youth.
Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with enemies in the gate.

The Freshman Year in Video

Here are a bunch of videos I picked out from the past year at NSA for your enjoyment. I'm not allowed to post anything from Rhetoric (there were some really good ones...and I recorded the most in that class), But you'll find some from every other class.
Note about downloading: because a lot of these are straight from my camera, they are not optimized for streaming. If you click on a link, it may seems that everything is frozen, but it's not; it's downloading, and some may take some time. If you want to make sure it's downloading, then right-click, and "save as".
I pity him who hath not broadband...

The next two kind of go together... they show a little of the intensity of study at NSA :) (Warning: These videos are not intended for prospective students)

Some Singing:

Natural Philosophy:

Latin: I have a lot of videos from this class... but only a few for now.

That's all folks!

Pictures by Term

I have uploaded a bunch of pictures from this last year, divided by term. I didn't have time to carefully sort, and they are rather random. These are by no means all, so if you have a specific picture in mind you don't see here, I probably have it somewhere. :-)

Since I sorted this quickly, the Complaint Form may be of use. Girls, don't hesitate to use it. If guys use it, I expect a 3 point, logical explanation of the complaint ;-)

I took this video in widescreen, but windows movie maker (grr) didn't keep the format.

One down, three to go...

Congratulations to all of you (us) as we have now survived a full year at NSA! The blog name has now been changed (note this) to the NSA Sophomore Class! Thanks for making this a terrific year, and let's enjoy our summers to the fullest, play hard, work hard, and look forward to the quickly approaching fall when we will have to study hard once again.

Gilligan's Island

Here is our Gilligan's Island Song Lyrics:

The verbs that take the dative case
With indirect command,
Are impero, mando, & persuadeo,
And persuadeo

The verbs that take accusative with Indirect Command,
Just happen to be these verbs three
Moneo, oro, rogo,
Moneo, oro, rogo
.

At last we come to postulo, quaero, & peto,
These are the verbs that choose to take
Ablative with the prep.
Ablative with the prep.

Heidelberg # 81

Who ought to come to the table of the Lord?
Those who are displeased with themselves for their sins, and who nevertheless trust that these sins have been forgiven them and that their remaining weakness is covered by the passion and death of Christ, and who also desire more and more to strengthen their faith and improve their life. The impenitent and hypocrites, however, eat and drink judgment to themselves.

Heidelberg # 80

What difference is there between the Lord's Supper and the papal Mass?
The Lord's Supper testifies to us that we have complete forgiveness of all our sins through the one sacrifice of Jesus Christ which he himself has accomplished on the cross once for all; (and that through the Holy Spirit we are incorporated into Christ, who is now in heaven with his true body at the right hand of the Father and is there to be worshiped.) But the Mass teaches that the living and the dead do not have forgiveness of sins through the sufferings of Christ unless Christ is again offered for them daily by the priest (and that Christ is bodily under the form of bread and wine and is therefore to be worshiped in them). Therefore the Mass is fundamentally a complete denial of the once for all sacrifice and passion of Jesus Christ ( and as such an idolatry to be condemned).

Heidelberg # 73

Then why does the Holy Spirit call baptism the water of rebirth and the washing away of sins?
God does not speak in this way except for a strong reason. Not only does he teach us by Baptism that just as the dirt of the body is taken away by water, so our sins are removed by the blood and Spirit of Christ; but more important still, by the divine pledge and sign he wishes to assure us that we are just as truly washed from our sins spiritually as our bodies are washed with water.

Heidelberg # 66

What are the Sacraments?

They are visible, holy signs and seals instituted by God in order that by their use he may the more fully disclose and seal to us the promise of the gospel, namely, that because of the one sacrifice of Christ accomplished on the cross he graciously grants us the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

The Star of Bethlehem

Doug Wilson preached a sermon during the Christmas season that I really appreciated! It was about the miracle that surrounds the account of the wise men being led by the Star of Bethlehem, but he ties that into the miracles that surround us everyday.
A few quotes:
"How can you breath? what's with that?"
"Your world is way too bizarre to be real."
"You could spend the rest of your life getting PHD's in what's going-on on one square inch of your lawn."

I'd like to post it here for all you students who were gone (or go to Trinity), and for all those who don't have the privilege of being here in Moscow.
